Saving our Environmnent, One Toothbrush at a Time

added on: November 26, 2012

We are all looking for ways to help the environment. What if I told you there is a way to be eco-conscious with your toothbrush.  Would you be willing to give it a try?

Looking for an eco-option to dispose of your toothbrush?  World Centric has a solution with their compostable toothbrushes and travel cases.  It is made out of Inego, which is derived from plants instead of petroleum based plastics.  The bristles are made out of nylon and are not compostable, but they are working on a better solution.  These toothbrushes can be mailed back to World Centric if you do not have a commercial composting facility nearby.

Vitacare is making eco-friendly toothbrushes.   These no frills toothbrushes are made out of 100% recyclable and biodegradable materials.  After three months, you can toss this toothbrush in the recycle bin.  I might be wondering though every time I brush where this toothbrush has been.

By taking small steps to help the environment, we can make a big impact.  According the research, 50 million pounds of toothbrushes make their way into U.S. landfills.   Toothbrushes will not degrade in a landfill.  Imagine all that waste adding up for future generations.

And, if everyone took Dr. Bilal Saib’s dental advice and replaced their toothbrushes every three months there would be even more toothbrushes in the landfills.   In Chapel Hill, check out Weaver Street Market or Whole Foods for eco-friendly toothbrushes.  Going green with eco-dentistry is a new trend, and we will be looking for ways to reduce waste in our Chapel Hill dental practice as well.  Happy Brushing!
